Weekly Wisdom with William: Overthinking & Perfection vs Decision & Action
Today’s #WeeklyWisdom comes from a few different thoughts about Overthinking, Perfection, and Action.
Overthinking is the biggest waste of human energy. Trust yourself, make a decision, and gain more experience. There is no such thing as perfect. You cannot think your way into perfection, just take action. (Sylvester McNutt III)
Perfection is a myth. True growth is birthed from missteps, embracing vulnerability, and daring to step out of your comfort zone. Learn into every fact of your journey, acknowledging that every flaw, every imperfection, is a stepping stone to becoming the best version of yourself.
Seek excellence, not perfection, from your best level of effort and awareness, and allow yourself the grace to learn and evolve (Willie Greene).
Step one is accepting that we never have all the information. Step two is not being paralyzed by that awareness.
It’s not uncommon for us to delay decisions or actions as we seek more information. But we run the risk of never making a decision if we seek certainty or guarantee. There must be a point where we make a decision.
Accepting that we can never have all the information is liberating! We can stop looking for assurance or certainty and instead ask a simple question:
“What information do I need to make a quality decision?”
If you can’t answer this question…then no amount of information will be good enough for you.
If you won’t answer that question, then your problem is not information – you have an emotional block somewhere you need to figure out.
Then maybe ask…Do I understand enough to be able to back up why I made this decision? Do I understand enough to take action? Am I open to the fact that this decision could be the wrong one and that it will be a learning experience? Am I flexible going forward to adjust my decisions and actions as I gain new information?
The hardest part? Figuring out where our line is – the line where we stop overthinking, stop seeking perfection, and make a decision 😊
If it helps one….
