Put Your Mask on First

We’ve all heard it before—the airline safety briefing that reminds us, “In the event of an emergency, secure your oxygen mask first before assisting others.” It’s a simple directive, yet one of the most overlooked principles in life and business.

As Mortgage Professionals, business owners, and high-achievers, we’re wired to serve. We wake up every day driven to help others—our clients, our teams, our families. We push hard, work long hours, and pour our energy into everyone else’s needs. But here’s the truth: if we don’t take care of ourselves first, we won’t have the energy, clarity, or longevity to keep serving at the level we strive for.

Think about it—if you’re exhausted, running on fumes, or constantly overwhelmed, how much of your best self are you truly giving to those who rely on you? Can you show up fully present for your clients? Can you bring the same energy to your team, your family, or even yourself? Probably not.

That’s why self-care isn’t selfish—it’s a strategy. It’s how you build endurance in this game. It’s how you stay sharp, innovative, and capable of handling the demands of our industry without burning out.

So what does “putting your mask on first” look like?

  • Protecting Your Energy: Set boundaries around your time, your schedule, and your mental space. You can’t be available to everyone 24/7 and expect to thrive.

  • Prioritizing Your Health: Move your body, fuel it well, and get the sleep you need. A strong business starts with a strong body and mind.

  • Investing in Growth: Read, learn, and sharpen your skills. The more you invest in yourself, the more valuable you become to those around you.

  • Taking Breaks Without Guilt: Sometimes, the best thing you can do is step away—recharge, reset, and return stronger.

I challenge you to ask yourself today: Am I taking care of myself in a way that allows me to show up fully for others? If the answer is “not really,” then it’s time to make some changes.

Because the truth is—when you prioritize yourself, you don’t just survive. You thrive. And when you thrive, everyone around you benefits.

So take a deep breath, put your mask on first, and let’s go make a difference—starting with ourselves!

In Health,
